Since photography is really all about playing with light I tried some darker images with very specified light.

I went downtown today which is a rare treat. I rode the Metro and explored some art in the Smithsonian. Its good to get outside of your comfort zone every now and again.

Having taken a break from making art on paper or canvas I am learning a lot about photography. Like the more traditional forms of art, painting and sculpture, photography is all about shaping light.

I am fascinated by the work of photographer David Levinthal. I have been thinking about how to set up my own little dioramas to take pictures of. Today I experimented with some toys and some interesting backgrounds. I’m pleased with the results!

At this point I take a camera with me wherever I go. Just to see what I might find. Today was just a day to chill at a friends pool and, per usual, I found some interesting photos.

I finished a commission last night. Paintings aren’t something I have been working on lately and it was fun to play with paint for a while. Maybe I could make a painted background piece and then layer portraits on top of it? Not a bad idea. This is what I worked on tonight including the commission….

My friend and I went to the vintage clothing room at the local antique shop. We tried on dresses and had fun!

So I bought some doll house furniture on Ebay that looked like vintage 50′s wood but really they are plastic toys made in China. They came beautifully packaged in cellophane with instructions about how to set them up (some of them have magnets and I am not sure why) and a lovely cardboard label. I bought them in order to take some funky pictures of them, which I did, but fell in love with them just as they came to me.

Cute doll house furniture in its package!

Here are the pieces…

Here are the instructions…..

These came with the packaging.
And now some altered photos…

I know why I want new images each night. Because I have grown up in a culture where we are bombarded with imagery all the time. Television, magazines, movies, and now the internet. Obviously this is not a new concept that other artists haven’t explored over and over again, Warhol and Lichtenstein come to mind and there are scores of others. I too want to find the ‘something new’ in each day.
